Transportation

Viasat, a global leader in satellite communications, has joined the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), marking a significant step toward the evolution of connected transportation. By uniting with top technology and automotive firms, Viasat aims to accelerate the development of innovative mobility solutions, including autonomous vehicles and predictive safety systems.

Advancing Connectivity with C-V2X

The centerpiece of this collaboration is Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X), a cutting-edge platform designed to enable vehicles to communicate seamlessly with their surroundings. From other vehicles and pedestrians to road infrastructure and mobile networks, C-V2X facilitates real-time interactions that enhance road safety, reduce emissions, and improve traffic management.

C-V2X holds the potential to redefine transportation through groundbreaking applications such as:

  • Fully autonomous vehicle support
  • Real-time supply chain monitoring
  • Advanced pedestrian and cyclist safety systems
  • Predictive maintenance tools to prevent vehicle failures

Viasat’s Role in the C-V2X Ecosystem

Joining the 5GAA, Viasat brings its expertise in satellite-based communication to advance mobility solutions beyond the reach of terrestrial networks. Known for its global Mobile Satellite Services (MSS), Viasat is working to integrate satellite connectivity with ground networks to create a robust, unified communication system.

This integration will support critical features such as:

  • Emergency response connectivity
  • Breakdown and accident assistance
  • Collision detection and prevention systems

Together with chipset makers, mobile network operators (MNOs), and automakers, Viasat is creating a direct-to-device ecosystem using its licensed L-band spectrum. Vehicles will be able to easily transition between satellite and terrestrial networks thanks to this solution, guaranteeing continuous connectivity.

Driving the Future of Transportation

Kevin Cohen, Vice President of Direct-to-Device Partnerships at Viasat, emphasized the transformative impact of this initiative:

Even in places with poor terrestrial coverage, cars can now run safely and independently thanks to the incorporation of satellite-powered connectivity. We can establish a single ecosystem for effective and sustainable transportation by merging satellite and ground networks.

Facilitating Resilient Communication.
Viasat’s contributions were welcomed by 5GAA Director General Johannes Springer, who said:

“Our attempts to create a C-V2X ecosystem that is futureproof are strengthened by Viasat’s creative approach to satellite-based connectivity. Advanced vehicle-to-everything communication will be made possible by their experience, particularly in isolated areas without access to terrestrial networks.

A Unified Mobility Ecosystem

The inclusion of Viasat in the 5GAA signifies a major leap toward creating a unified mobility ecosystem. By combining satellite and terrestrial connectivity, this partnership aims to ensure safer roads, more efficient logistics, and smarter transportation systems.

As C-V2X technology continues to evolve, collaborations like these will pave the way for a future where vehicles operate autonomously and communicate seamlessly, making connected transportation a global reality.
