STLA AutoDrive L3 system in action on the road

Stellantis has officially launched STLA AutoDrive 1.0, its first in-house-developed automated driving system, marking a significant step in the company’s technological evolution. This cutting-edge system offers hands-free, eyes-off driving (SAE Level 3) capabilities, aiming to enhance driver convenience and transform commuting experiences.

Smarter Driving, Less Stress

Designed to operate at speeds of up to 60 km/h (37 mph), STLA AutoDrive significantly reduces driver workload in heavy traffic and stop-and-go conditions. By taking control in these scenarios, the system gives drivers the freedom to reclaim valuable time—whether by catching up on emails, watching a movie, reading a book, or simply enjoying the journey.

According to Ned Curic, Stellantis’ Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, the company is committed to making driving more efficient and enjoyable. “Helping drivers make the best use of their time is a priority. STLA AutoDrive allows them to sit back and relax while the system handles the routine aspects of driving.”

How STLA AutoDrive Works

The system is designed for seamless activation and intuitive operation. When conditions are suitable, the driver is notified that STLA AutoDrive is available. With the press of a button, the system takes over, automatically managing steering, braking, and acceleration while maintaining safe distances and adjusting to traffic flow.

Equipped with an advanced suite of sensors, the system continuously monitors its surroundings to ensure smooth and safe operation. Whether it’s nighttime, light rain, or road spray, STLA AutoDrive maintains high precision and reliability. To further enhance performance, an automated sensor-cleaning system ensures critical components remain clear at all times.

Designed for Comfort and Safety

One of the standout features of STLA AutoDrive is its ability to react naturally and predictably, making the driving experience feel human-like. From maintaining proper following distances to seamlessly adjusting for merging traffic, the system delivers a stress-free and confidence-inspiring ride.

For higher-speed driving, STLA AutoDrive also includes Adaptive Cruise Control and lane-centering features, offering both Level 2 (hands-on) and Level 2+ (hands-off, eyes-on) driving modes. This makes highway travel more comfortable and less fatiguing.

Scalable, Future-Ready Technology

Built on a scalable architecture, STLA AutoDrive is designed for global deployment across Stellantis’ vehicle lineup. The system supports over-the-air updates, allowing continuous improvements based on real-time data integration. This ensures the technology stays up to date with the latest advancements and regulatory requirements.

Currently, STLA AutoDrive complies with all applicable regional driving laws, including restrictions on phone use and driver conduct. However, Stellantis envisions expanding its capabilities in the future, potentially enabling hands-free, eyes-off driving at speeds up to 95 km/h (59 mph) and enhanced off-road automation for select models.

The Road Ahead

STLA AutoDrive represents a major step forward in automated driving technology, aligning with Stellantis’ broader innovation strategy, which includes STLA Brain and STLA Smart Cockpit. As the company continues to push the boundaries of vehicle automation, drivers can look forward to a future where driving is not just easier, but also safer and more enjoyable.

With STLA AutoDrive, the future of autonomous mobility is closer than ever—and it’s starting with Stellantis.
