Qualcomm and BMW Group Unveil New AD System

After three years of intensive collaboration, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and BMW Group have officially introduced Snapdragon Ride Pilot, a new automated driving (AD) system designed to bring safer and smarter mobility to roads worldwide. Built on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Ride SoCs and powered by the Snapdragon Ride AD software stack, co-developed by both companies, the system marks a major milestone in the evolution of advanced driver assistance technologies.

A System Designed for Safety and Scale

According to the companies, Snapdragon Ride Pilot is engineered to meet the industry’s most stringent safety standards, supporting everything from entry-level NCAP features to Level 2+ highway and urban navigation-on-autopilot (NOA) functions. The technology has already been validated across more than 60 global markets, with availability expected to expand to over 100 countries by 2026.

The system will make its debut in the all-new BMW iX3, the first model in BMW’s highly anticipated Neue Klasse lineup. Importantly, Qualcomm has made the platform available to automakers and Tier 1 suppliers globally, allowing for wide-scale adoption beyond BMW’s vehicles.

A Global Development Effort

The Snapdragon Ride AD software stack represents the combined expertise of over 1,400 engineers and specialists working across Germany, the United States, Sweden, Romania, and BMW’s AD Test Center in the Czech Republic. This massive joint development effort reflects the complexity of building a robust ADAS platform that is flexible enough to serve different vehicle classes and regions.

Nakul Duggal, Qualcomm’s GM for automotive, described the partnership as “transformative,” noting that the collaboration has produced a “world-class system” that prioritizes both safety and comfort. Dr. Mihiar Ayoubi, BMW’s SVP of driving experience, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the technology embodies BMW’s philosophy of delivering “smart, symbiotic, and safe” driving.

Inside the Snapdragon Ride AD Stack

The co-developed software stack integrates several critical layers:

  • 360° Perception: A vision-based system that combines object detection, lane recognition, mapping, and parking assistance. Using a bird’s-eye-view architecture and enhanced radar-camera fusion, the platform delivers faster, more accurate responses in both highway and urban settings.

  • Safety-First Design: Built with compliance to ASIL, FuSa, NCAP, FMVSS127, and DCAS standards, the system also addresses Safety of the Intended Functionality (SOTIF) while adding strong cybersecurity protections such as layered encryption and real-time threat detection.

  • Context-Aware Driving: Incorporates a hybrid of rule-based logic and AI-driven prediction to manage complex traffic situations, such as lane changes, intersections, and overtaking maneuvers.

Development is accelerated through Qualcomm’s data and simulation factory, which blends real-world and synthetic data to train the system for diverse driving environments. The stack also supports OTA updates and customization through the Snapdragon Ride SDK, enabling automakers to tailor features for specific vehicle models.

Snapdragon Ride in BMW’s Neue Klasse

The BMW iX3 will serve as the launch vehicle for Snapdragon Ride Pilot. It features a centralized “superbrain” computer powered by Qualcomm SoCs that deliver 20 times more processing power than BMW’s previous AD platform. With high-resolution 8MP and 3MP cameras, radar coverage, GNSS localization, and HD mapping, the vehicle achieves robust situational awareness.

The system supports hands-free highway driving, contextual lane changes, AI-powered parking assistance, and driver monitoring. Additionally, the iX3 will feature Qualcomm’s V2X 200 chipset, enabling communication with other vehicles, pedestrians, and infrastructure to enhance safety beyond traditional sensor limits.

A New Era in Automated Driving

The introduction of Snapdragon Ride Pilot underscores how cross-industry partnerships are reshaping mobility. For BMW, it represents a core innovation of the Neue Klasse era. For Qualcomm, it demonstrates the scalability of Snapdragon Ride for global automakers. Together, the companies are setting a new benchmark for safety, intelligence, and flexibility in automated driving solutions.
