Stellantis and Pony.ai have announced a strategic alliance aimed at accelerating the development and testing of SAE Level 4 autonomous vehicles across Europe. This partnership merges Stellantis’ cutting-edge AV-Ready Platform with Pony.ai’s advanced autonomous driving technology, marking a significant step toward the large-scale introduction of driverless mobility on European roads.
The collaboration will begin with real-world trials in Luxembourg, where the Peugeot e-Traveller model will serve as the foundation for testing. These trials will focus on assessing safety, system performance, and compliance with evolving European regulatory frameworks. The insights gained from these early deployments will guide future commercial rollout plans, paving the way for widespread adoption of robotaxi and self-driving delivery services throughout the region.
As one of Europe’s foremost producers of light commercial vehicles (LCVs), Stellantis will utilize its Pro One business unit to accelerate the integration of autonomous technologies into its existing vehicle lineup. Stellantis’ LCVs—known for their adaptability, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness—are considered ideal candidates for urban transport applications, from passenger shuttles to last-mile delivery solutions.
Ned Curic, Stellantis’ Chief Engineering & Technology Officer, emphasized the transformative potential of autonomous driving:
“Driverless vehicles have the power to redefine how people move through our cities, making transportation safer, more accessible, and more affordable. To achieve this vision, we’ve developed Stellantis’ AV-Ready Platforms and are collaborating with the most capable partners in the industry. Pony.ai distinguishes itself with exceptional technical depth and a truly cooperative spirit.”
Pony.ai, a leader in global autonomous driving solutions with operations spanning the U.S. and Asia, views this partnership as a strategic opportunity to establish a foothold in the European market.
“We are thrilled to work with Stellantis to introduce our autonomous mobility technology to Europe,” said Dr. James Peng, Co-Founder and CEO of Pony.ai. “Stellantis’ strong presence across the continent and its diverse portfolio of iconic automotive brands make it an ideal partner as we continue expanding our technology and services internationally.”
Stellantis’ AV-Ready Platform has been specifically designed to meet the high safety and performance standards required for SAE Level 4 automation. It features system redundancies, robust power management, and compatibility with advanced sensor arrays, including LiDAR, radar, and camera suites. These engineering features ensure the platform can handle complex urban environments and dynamic traffic scenarios safely and reliably.
While the initial phase of the collaboration will concentrate on light commercial vehicles, both companies envision expanding their efforts to include a broader range of autonomous mobility services. Potential applications include robotaxis, self-driving shuttles, and autonomous logistics solutions designed to serve both private and public transportation needs.
By joining forces, Stellantis and Pony.ai aim to accelerate the transition toward a new era of intelligent, driverless mobility in Europe—one defined by safety, sustainability, and innovation.
