Autonomous race car speeding on Yas Marina Circuit

The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) is gearing up for its second season, with race day scheduled for April 26, 2025, at the iconic Yas Marina Circuit. This much-anticipated season will bring significant upgrades, featuring both new teams and a more advanced race car, setting the stage for an even more thrilling competition.

Season 2 of A2RL will welcome four new international teams to the fold: AiPEX Racing from the USA, Aladin Innovation from France, SEVRUS Japan (TGM Grand Prix) from Japan, and a team from the UAE’s Technology Innovation Institute (TII). These newcomers will join the original teams that competed in the inaugural season held in April 2024, which saw participants from various countries, including the USA, Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, Italy, Singapore, China, and the UAE. With the addition of new talent and expertise, this season promises an even more intense and diverse competition.

The race format and further details of the upcoming season will be revealed following a rigorous simulation phase scheduled for November. During this phase, all teams, both seasoned and new, will be put to the test under demanding conditions. The simulation will challenge their ability to control their autonomous race cars in scenarios that mimic real-world issues such as GPS signal loss and sensor malfunctions. Additionally, teams will need to demonstrate advanced skills such as overtaking, warming up tires and brakes, and executing precise hot laps. They’ll also face off against virtual opponents as part of the qualification process. Only those that meet these stringent quality gateways will make it to the starting grid for race day.

As in the previous season, the teams will be competing for a substantial prize pool of US$2.25 million. This hefty prize is sure to attract some of the brightest minds in AI, programming, and engineering from around the world, making A2RL a key platform for pushing the boundaries of autonomous vehicle technology. The competition isn’t just about speed on the track; it’s about harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to outperform rivals through strategy, precision, and innovation.

One of the most exciting developments for Season 2 is the introduction of an upgraded version of the Super Formula Emirates Autonomous Vehicle, known as EAV24. This new race car comes with cutting-edge features, including body panels made from sustainable bio-composite materials. Its sleek, aerodynamic design is inspired by digital algorithms and AI-driven data patterns, further embodying the league’s commitment to innovation. The EAV24 will be the centerpiece of the season, with teams vying to develop the most effective AI systems to pilot this high-performance machine.

H.E. Faisal Al Bannai, adviser to the UAE president and secretary general of the Advanced Technology Research Council, emphasized the significance of this competition for the country and beyond. “By pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with autonomous technology, we are accelerating innovation across sectors and positioning the UAE as a leader in the global AI landscape,” he said. His words underscore the strategic importance of A2RL, not just as a sporting event but as a driver of technological advancement.

With new teams, cutting-edge technology, and a more advanced race car, the second season of the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League is shaping up to be a landmark event in the world of autonomous racing. As teams battle for supremacy on the track, they will also be pushing the limits of what AI can achieve, further cementing A2RL’s role as a pioneer in the future of autonomous sports.
