HERE Technologies and the BMW Group have announced an extended partnership to enhance the driving experience, improve road safety, and advance software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture. This collaboration introduces cutting-edge mapping solutions to new BMW models, providing drivers with unparalleled functionality and compliance with the latest regulations.
Unified Mapping for a Seamless Driving Experience
BMW’s latest models will integrate a unified stack of standard-definition (SD) and high-definition (HD) map data from HERE Technologies. These maps power a range of advanced driving functions, including lane-level positioning, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and automated driving features.
At the core of this innovation is UniMap, HERE’s AI-powered unified mapping system. UniMap consolidates SD, ADAS, and HD data into a single, semantically consistent digital representation of the road network. This enables BMW to deliver continuously updated maps, streamline development, and accelerate the deployment of unique location-based services.
“An AI-powered unified mapping system is essential for software-defined vehicles. It simplifies development, lowers costs, and accelerates time-to-market for automakers building unique location-based services and solutions,” said Gino Ferru, SVP and General Manager EMEA at HERE Technologies.
Enabling Compliance and Safety
HERE’s advanced map system supports BMW in complying with the European Union’s Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) regulation, a critical component of modern vehicle safety. Additionally, these maps help BMW achieve top ratings in the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), further enhancing its reputation for safety and innovation.
BMW’s Level 3 Automated Driving Revolution
The partnership highlights the deployment of HERE HD Live Map in the BMW Personal Pilot Level 3 automated driving system. Available in the new BMW 7 Series since March 2024, this function allows conditional hands-free and eyes-free driving on highways in Germany at speeds of up to 60 km/h during heavy traffic.
This groundbreaking feature represents a significant leap forward in automated driving technology, providing drivers with unmatched convenience while ensuring safety under specific conditions.
A Proven Track Record of Innovation
HERE Technologies continues to demonstrate its leadership in mapping and location-based solutions. To date, more than 220 million vehicles have been equipped with HERE maps, including over 53 million cars in Europe and North America utilizing HERE maps for ADAS and automated driving use cases.
Driving the Future Together
By integrating HERE’s AI-powered mapping solutions, the BMW Group is poised to redefine the driving experience while ensuring compliance with stringent safety standards. This extended partnership exemplifies how technology can transform mobility, paving the way for safer, smarter, and more connected vehicles.
