The Hong Kong Transport Department (TD) has made a landmark decision by granting Baidu Apollo the inaugural pilot license to test autonomous vehicles (AV) in the region. This authorization allows the company to deploy its cutting-edge Apollo autonomous driving technology on Hong Kong roads for the first time. Under this license, Baidu will trial a fleet of 10 autonomous vehicles in North Lantau, focusing on key road sections to assess the technology’s readiness and safety.
Limited Deployment for Initial Testing
In the initial phase of the pilot program, only one autonomous vehicle will participate in each road test at a time. These tests will be conducted on designated road sections, specifically between Hong Kong International Airport Car Park 4 and Chek Lap Kok South Road. During these trials, safety remains a top priority. Each vehicle will have a human driver onboard who can immediately take control of the car if any issues arise.
