Driverless truck tested in Dubai South logistics district

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reached a significant milestone by successfully completing the initial tests of its first driverless trucks. These trials were conducted by Dubai South, a prominent logistics and aviation hub, in collaboration with Evocargo, a local company known for its advancements in autonomous vehicle technology.

The agreement to initiate these tests was signed in December 2022, paving the way for the deployment of the Evocargo N1, an unmanned electric vehicle, on a pre-determined route within the Dubai South logistics district. This district is a bustling area where the vehicle operated in conjunction with pedestrians, automobiles, and traditional trucks. The comprehensive testing aimed to evaluate the vehicle’s automated capabilities, particularly focusing on its array of cameras and ultrasonic sensors designed to provide a full 360-degree view of its surroundings.

Key aspects of the vehicle’s performance were meticulously assessed during these tests. Object detection systems were put to the test to ensure the vehicle could identify and respond to various obstacles in its path. Additionally, the vehicle’s ability to prevent accidents, avoid collisions, execute emergency stops, perform parking maneuvers, and operate in reverse were rigorously examined. Impressively, the tests concluded without any reported failures or hazardous incidents, highlighting the reliability and safety of the Evocargo N1.

The trials also involved the successful operation of a control hub designed for the remote monitoring and control of the truck. This hub functioned seamlessly, further validating the system’s effectiveness. During the second phase of testing, the Evocargo N1 was tasked with transporting freight along a standardized route within a closed area. The vehicle completed all assigned tasks successfully, reinforcing its potential for future logistical applications.

Ahmed Al-Ansi, CEO of Evocargo, expressed his enthusiasm for the successful trials, stating, “Evocargo’s trials in the UAE highlight our objective to provide reliable and efficient logistics services in the region.” His statement underscores the company’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology to enhance logistics services within the UAE.

This initiative aligns with Dubai’s broader autonomous transportation strategy, which aims to see 25% of all journeys in the emirate conducted using autonomous solutions by the year 2030. This ambitious goal reflects Dubai’s vision to become a global leader in autonomous technology and sustainable transportation solutions.

Mohsen Ahmad, CEO of the logistics district at Dubai South, also commented on the milestone, saying, “This groundbreaking milestone underscores Dubai South’s commitment to supporting the UAE’s vision of establishing Dubai as a global logistics powerhouse.” He highlighted the transformative potential of autonomous vehicles in revolutionizing the logistics industry, enhancing operational efficiency, and reducing the carbon footprint. Ahmad emphasized that these advancements contribute to creating a sustainable and technologically advanced logistics infrastructure for both Dubai and the broader UAE.

The successful completion of these initial tests marks a significant step forward in the UAE’s journey towards autonomous transportation. It demonstrates the country’s dedication to embracing innovative technologies that promise to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of its logistics sector. As Dubai continues to pursue its vision of integrating autonomous solutions into its transportation network, the achievements of Evocargo and Dubai South serve as a testament to the potential and promise of autonomous vehicle technology in shaping the future of logistics and transportation in the region.
