Qatar Aviation Services (QAS), in collaboration with MATAR and Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP) – a member of Qatar Foundation – has launched a groundbreaking autonomous mobility trial at Hamad International Airport. This initiative, the first of its kind in the region, aims to enhance airside operations through cutting-edge autonomous vehicle technology.
As part of the proof-of-concept trials, an autonomous staff bus and an autonomous baggage tractor are now in operation. These advanced vehicles leverage GPS, AI-driven systems, intelligent sensors, and lidar technology to ensure seamless 24/7 operations under diverse weather conditions. Additionally, they feature real-time monitoring and automated charging systems to maximize efficiency and safety.
The initiative is a significant step towards optimizing airport operations by reducing manual interventions and increasing sustainability. If successful, the project will pave the way for a broader integration of autonomous vehicles, contributing to Qatar’s vision of a smart, tech-driven transportation framework.
Hamad Ali Al Khater, Chief Operating Officer at Hamad International Airport, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Our airport is proud to lead the way in autonomous mobility. This initiative reflects our dedication to efficiency, safety, and sustainability. We are excited to embrace a future where technology and mobility seamlessly merge and look forward to achieving groundbreaking results through collaboration with our key partners.”
Murat Nursel, Senior Vice President at QAS, highlighted the company’s commitment to innovation, saying, “At QAS, we are driven by a relentless pursuit of excellence. Testing autonomous vehicles in collaboration with MATAR and QSTP demonstrates our commitment to supporting our nation’s vision while enhancing operational efficiency. We remain dedicated to redefining excellence and delivering unparalleled value to both customers and employees.”
Dr. Jack Lau, President of QSTP, emphasized the broader impact of the trials, stating, “At QSTP, we champion the development of cutting-edge technologies that transform industries. This collaboration not only advances technology but also accelerates the digital transformation of the aviation sector. The Level 4 autonomous vehicle solutions being trialed at Hamad International Airport are a testament to Qatar’s leadership in smart mobility. This initiative aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030, reinforcing our collective role in building a sustainable, technology-driven economy.”
By pioneering these trials, Hamad International Airport is setting a new benchmark for aviation innovation in the region. The success of this initiative could lead to a fully autonomous airport ecosystem, positioning Qatar at the forefront of the global smart mobility revolution.
