Mercedes-Benz has taken a significant step forward in the field of automated driving with the latest upgrade to its conditionally automated driving system, DRIVE PILOT. The system has recently been certified by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority, making it the fastest-approved SAE Level 3 automated driving system for standard production vehicles. The enhanced version of DRIVE PILOT is set to hit the market in Germany by early 2025.
Enhanced Performance on German Autobahns
The updated DRIVE PILOT system now allows automated driving in flowing traffic at speeds of up to 95 km/h under specific conditions. This certification applies to the entire 13,191 km-long German Autobahn network, providing customers with an improved driving experience. Drivers can now spend more time in automated mode, enabling them to make better use of their free time while on the road.
When DRIVE PILOT is engaged, drivers are legally permitted to focus on secondary activities, such as watching TV or streaming content through apps like Sony’s RIDEVU. This innovation marks a significant milestone, offering a blend of convenience, safety, and cutting-edge technology for Mercedes-Benz customers.
Available on Luxury Models
DRIVE PILOT is an optional feature available on two flagship Mercedes-Benz models: the S-Class and the EQS. Both vehicles represent the pinnacle of luxury and innovation, making them ideal platforms for the deployment of such advanced technologies.
For customers who already own vehicles equipped with DRIVE PILOT, Mercedes-Benz is offering the upgrade at no additional cost. The update can be installed remotely via an over-the-air (OTA) update or during a routine visit to a Mercedes-Benz workshop.
A Commitment to Innovation and Safety
Markus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer and Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, expressed his excitement about the advancements in automated driving.
He remarked, “At Mercedes-Benz, we aim to consistently deliver innovative solutions that enhance our customers’ experience. With DRIVE PILOT activated, drivers can focus on other activities while the vehicle manages the driving responsibilities. This upgraded version, now approved by Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority, extends this capability to speeds of 95 km/h under specific conditions on German roads.”
Schäfer also emphasized the brand’s commitment to safety and innovation, stating, “It fills me with pride to see Mercedes-Benz leading the way with the fastest-certified system for conditionally automated driving. I am confident that our safety-centric approach will continue to enable us to achieve more groundbreaking milestones in automated driving technology.”
Pioneering the Future of Automated Driving
Mercedes-Benz’s DRIVE PILOT system sets a new benchmark in the industry, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to innovation and leadership in the autonomous driving space. With this latest achievement, the company not only enhances the driving experience but also continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in automotive technology.
As the rollout of DRIVE PILOT progresses, Mercedes-Benz is paving the way for a future where drivers can enjoy more freedom and efficiency while relying on the reliability and sophistication of advanced automated systems.
