Volkswagen Group and MOIA have officially introduced the first series-production version of the ID. Buzz AD—an all-electric, fully autonomous vehicle designed specifically for mobility services. This advanced vehicle is part of a broader, integrated solution that also includes software and operational tools aimed at helping public and private mobility providers easily launch and manage autonomous ride services.
The ID. Buzz AD represents a major milestone in Volkswagen’s strategy to position itself at the forefront of autonomous transport. The initiative combines cutting-edge technology, a fleet of eye-catching vehicles, intelligent fleet management tools, and a user-friendly booking system—all under one roof. According to Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume, this holistic approach delivers a turnkey solution for cities, municipalities, and fleet operators to deploy autonomous mobility services efficiently and at scale.
“With this comprehensive solution, we’re offering something truly unique,” said Blume. “Our autonomous ID. Buzz shuttles are ready for real-world deployment. Beginning in Hamburg and expanding to other markets by 2026, we aim to roll out this technology across Europe and the U.S. It’s a step forward in our mission to lead the global shift toward smart and sustainable transport.”
Christian Senger, CEO of Volkswagen Autonomous Mobility, emphasized the technological leap represented by the ID. Buzz AD. “This is where future tech becomes today’s solution,” Senger stated. “We’ve brought together a sophisticated vehicle and equally advanced software to create a fully autonomous offering that’s scalable and rooted in artificial intelligence. Our aim is to build intelligent mobility services that not only meet global demands but also strengthen Europe’s role as a leader in innovation.”
MOIA’s contribution is crucial to transforming the ID. Buzz AD into a ready-to-go mobility service. Their platform integrates Mobileye’s self-driving technology with MOIA’s proprietary Autonomous Driving Mobility as a Service (AD MaaS) software ecosystem. This system uses AI to manage fleets in real time, ensure passenger safety, provide assistance, and integrate seamlessly with existing apps. It also complies with SAE Level 4 automation standards, incorporating remote monitoring and emergency handling capabilities.
A key element of the offering is “operator enablement.” This includes full training, operational support, and simulation tools for fleet operators to run autonomous services effectively. From initial deployment to daily operation, the system ensures a smooth and safe transition to driverless mobility.
Sascha Meyer, CEO of MOIA, underlined the broader social impact of the initiative. “Mobility is a fundamental human need, and AI allows us to meet that need in new and powerful ways,” he said. “With the ID. Buzz AD and our autonomous ecosystem, we’re offering a flexible, comfortable, and affordable solution that can benefit cities, suburbs, and rural areas alike—addressing issues like driver shortages and service gaps.”
Together, Volkswagen and MOIA are not just launching a new vehicle—they’re redefining what mobility can look like in a smarter, driverless future.
