Next-gen Nissan ProPilot AD system

Nissan is preparing to usher in a new era of autonomous driving with the launch of its next-generation ProPilot technology, scheduled to roll out starting in fiscal year 2027. This advanced system promises to push the boundaries of vehicle autonomy, thanks to a combination of cutting-edge hardware and groundbreaking artificial intelligence.

At the heart of this next-gen ProPilot system is Nissan’s Ground Truth Perception technology. This proprietary solution integrates next-generation lidar sensors with other advanced components to offer a more complete understanding of a vehicle’s surroundings. By fusing data from cameras, radar, and lidar, the system can generate a highly detailed, real-time map of the environment, enabling it to respond to potential hazards with greater speed and accuracy.

In a significant collaboration, Nissan has also teamed up with UK-based AI startup Wayve to incorporate its AI Driver software into the ProPilot system. Wayve’s technology is built on its unique embodied AI foundation model, which has been designed to mimic human-like driving behavior even in highly complex, unpredictable traffic scenarios. By continuously learning from large-scale driving data, Wayve’s AI evolves over time, allowing Nissan’s future vehicles to make smarter, more intuitive decisions on the road.

Nissan believes this strategic integration will provide its vehicles with a lasting edge in the competitive landscape of autonomous mobility. The ability of Wayve’s AI to learn quickly and adapt in real time means future Nissan models will benefit from constant updates and improvements—essentially getting smarter the more they drive.

Recent developments further highlight Nissan’s push into autonomous innovation. The company recently concluded the UK’s most recent autonomous driving research initiative, underscoring its active role in global AD advancements. In addition, Nissan has been actively testing and demonstrating its latest autonomous driving capabilities in the Minato Mirai district of Yokohama, showcasing the progress made in real-world conditions.

Currently, Nissan offers ProPilot Assist, a hands-on driver assistance feature that includes Intelligent Cruise Control and Steering Assist. This system supports the driver by maintaining a set distance from the vehicle ahead, helping to keep the car centered in its lane, and even managing stop-and-go traffic with a stop-and-hold function.

An upgraded version, ProPilot Assist with Navi-link, offers even greater functionality. By syncing with the car’s navigation system, it can anticipate curves and exits, automatically adjusting speed to enhance safety and comfort. Additional features like Speed Adjust by Route and Speed Limit Assist further elevate the driving experience by helping drivers stay within legal limits and manage speed intelligently based on road conditions.

With the launch of its next-generation ProPilot system on the horizon, Nissan is clearly aiming to redefine what’s possible in the world of autonomous driving.
