WeRide and Uber robotaxi in Dubai streets

WeRide, a pioneer in autonomous driving technology, is taking a major step in its global expansion by partnering with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Uber Technologies, Inc. The collaboration aims to introduce self-driving robotaxis to Dubai’s public transport system, offering a glimpse into the future of urban mobility in the Middle East.

As part of the agreement, WeRide, Uber, and RTA will launch pilot programs designed to integrate autonomous vehicles into the city’s existing transportation infrastructure. The initiative will utilize Uber’s platform to connect riders with WeRide’s driverless vehicles, offering a streamlined and convenient experience for users. This partnership highlights a shared commitment to innovation and positions Dubai as a regional leader in the adoption of cutting-edge mobility solutions.

Beyond just launching robotaxis, the collaboration will explore a broader range of areas to ensure the smooth deployment of autonomous vehicles. Key areas of focus include the analysis of mobility data, the development of robust safety standards, and the establishment of regulatory frameworks that support long-term growth. By aligning with the RTA, both companies are ensuring that the integration of autonomous technology aligns with Dubai’s strategic vision for smart and sustainable transportation.

WeRide’s entry into the Dubai market comes after a series of major accomplishments. In 2023, the company was awarded the UAE’s first national license for operating autonomous vehicles on public roads—a groundbreaking achievement for the region. This national-level license, the first of its kind in the Middle East, authorizes WeRide to operate all types of AVs, solidifying its position as a leader in the autonomous mobility space.

The Dubai rollout follows WeRide’s earlier success in Abu Dhabi, where it launched its first robotaxi service in 2021. With the addition of Dubai, this marks the second city in the region where WeRide and Uber are collaborating to bring autonomous driving solutions to the public, further expanding their footprint in the Gulf region.

Jennifer Li, who serves as WeRide’s Chief Financial Officer and oversees its international operations, highlighted the significance of the Dubai expansion as a key move in the company’s broader global mission. “Expanding into Dubai is a natural progression for us as we look to deepen our footprint in the Middle East and beyond. Combining our expertise in autonomous technology with Uber’s extensive mobility network gives us the opportunity to transform how people move in cities worldwide,” she said.

Meanwhile, Uber’s Global Head of Autonomous Mobility and Delivery, Noah Zych, expressed strong support for the partnership, emphasizing its potential to accelerate the future of transportation. “Our collaboration with the RTA and WeRide is an exciting milestone. By bringing autonomous vehicles onto the Uber platform in Dubai, we’re taking a meaningful step toward scaling this technology globally. Our goal is to work with the best in the field to deliver safe, efficient, and innovative mobility options,” he commented.

As Dubai continues to evolve into a smart, tech-forward city, the introduction of autonomous robotaxis aligns perfectly with its strategic vision for future mobility. This partnership between WeRide, Uber, and the RTA stands to not only redefine public transportation in the region but also serve as a model for other cities seeking to embrace next-generation transport solutions.
