Mercedes-Benz has achieved a remarkable milestone in the field of automated driving by obtaining approval for a conditional automated driving (Level 3) highway road test license in Beijing. This accomplishment solidifies Mercedes-Benz as a pioneering force among automakers, entering Level 3 automated driving trials in the Chinese market. The company’s proactive engagement with regulatory authorities underscores its commitment to advancing and tailoring its cutting-edge Level 3 systems to suit the unique demands of Chinese roadways.

What truly distinguishes Mercedes-Benz on a global scale is its exclusive status as the only car manufacturer with the world’s first internationally recognized system approval for conditionally automated driving and an SAE Level 4 driverless parking system. At the heart of this technological prowess is the Level 3 system, known as DRIVE PILOT, seamlessly integrating with sensor technology derived from the comprehensive Driving Assistance Package. DRIVE PILOT takes a step further by incorporating additional sensors deemed essential for ensuring the safety and efficacy of conditionally automated driving.

The additional sensors include a LiDAR sensor, an advanced stereo camera ingeniously positioned in the front window, a versatile camera strategically located in the rear window, and specialized microphones meticulously designed for detecting distinctive signals from emergency vehicles, such as the presence of blue lights. This comprehensive sensor array forms the bedrock of Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to delivering a secure and robust autonomous driving experience.

Mercedes-Benz has been actively testing and validating its Level 3 system, conducting rigorous proving ground assessments in China since 2021. This ongoing effort reflects the brand’s dedication to continually enhancing the performance and reliability of its automated driving technology. In the United States, Mercedes-Benz has already showcased the production-ready version of DRIVE PILOT, making its on-road debut in California and Nevada with a limited fleet of Level 3-equipped EQS Sedans.

Markus Schäfer, a Member of the Board of Management at Mercedes-Benz Group AG and Chief Technology Officer for Development and Procurement, expressed the company’s unwavering commitment to delivering a superior customer experience on a global scale. Having successfully introduced DRIVE PILOT in Germany and the U.S., obtaining the testing license in Beijing marks a pivotal milestone in adapting conditionally automated driving for Chinese roads. Schäfer emphasized that Mercedes-Benz will leverage its extensive global expertise to support the local research and development team in designing a system that prioritizes safety and reliability.

As part of its strategic expansion initiatives, Mercedes-Benz aims to strengthen its local Research and Development team in China, anticipating growth to 2,000 members by the conclusion of 2023. This deliberate effort underscores the brand’s commitment to advancing automotive technology and solidifying its position as a global leader in the realm of automated driving innovation.
