Ambarella Unveils Next-Gen AI SoCs

Ambarella, Inc., renowned for its edge AI semiconductors, has unveiled its latest advancements in AI systems-on-chip (SoCs) at the AutoSens USA event, held from May 21-23. This event gathered key players including OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, and supply chain engineers specializing in automotive sensing technologies. Ambarella’s new 5nm SoCs are set to enhance in-vehicle fleet telematics systems, significantly improving the functionality of AI dash cams and vehicle gateways.

Among the new releases, the CV75AX SoC stands out, offering up to twice the AI performance of its predecessor. This improvement facilitates the use of advanced transformer neural networks, which enhance accuracy and reduce false positives without requiring extensive object-specific training. According to Ambarella, this makes the CV75AX particularly well-suited for AI dash cams that incorporate front-facing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and driver monitoring systems (DMS). The SoC also supports the development of more intricate driver-scoring models, which can provide deeper insights into driver behavior and performance.

In parallel, the CV72AX SoC is tailored for next-generation vehicle gateways. It can support up to 10 cameras and delivers up to six times the AI performance compared to previous models. This enables the integration of vision transformers and multi-modal vision language models (VLMs), which are crucial for features such as instant event alerts, multi-channel video pre-categorization, and natural-language search capabilities for more efficient video analysis.

Both SoCs are powered by Ambarella’s CVflow 3.0 AI engine and boast double the CPU performance. They support LPDDR5 memory, which offers twice the DRAM bandwidth, and include a high-speed USB 3.2 interface compatible with 5G modems. These features ensure the SoCs can handle the rigorous demands of modern telematics systems.

Manufactured using Samsung Foundry’s 5nm FinFET process technology, the SoCs are designed to operate within a broad temperature range of -40°C to 105°C. They also come equipped with an advanced image signal processor and H.264/5 video encoder, ensuring high-quality imaging and multi-channel recording capabilities.

Senya Pertsel, Ambarella’s senior director of automotive marketing, highlighted the widespread adoption of their current generation AI SoCs by leading fleet telematics providers. “Our unique ability to enable fanless AI dash cams that don’t obstruct the driver’s view has been a key factor in our success,” Pertsel noted. “With the new CV75AX and CV72AX SoCs, we’re offering enhanced AI performance, efficiency, and feature sets, all while maintaining our fanless design. These improvements have already attracted interest from top telematics providers who are evaluating our SoCs for next-generation systems.”

Both the CV75AX and CV72AX SoCs utilize the same software development kit (SDK) and are supported by Ambarella’s Cooper Developer Platform. This platform offers comprehensive hardware and software solutions tailored for edge AI systems, facilitating the development and deployment of innovative automotive technologies.
